A message from Dr. Kerry Kriger
In 2017, I had the pleasure to hear Zaki Ahmad sing Mian ki Malhar at a Kathak demonstration in Hyderabad. Zaki comes from a musical family, and a few months later I performed with Zaki’s brother (Zaheen Khan, an exceptional tabla player) in Delhi. I’ve stayed in touch with Zaki since then and even taken some lessons in raag Kedar from him.
Zaki can teach you to sing in a variety of styles, including Hindustani Sangeet (north Indian ragas), Sufi and light classical.
On top of being enjoyable, singing will do wonders for your sense of pitch. Learning to sing ragas is directly transferable to bansuri playing as we are generally striving to produce the gayaki ang (vocal style). As such, I encourage you to take vocal lessons with Zaki: you will find that it is a great way to improve your musicality, learn ragas, expand your network of musicians, integrate yourself with the Indian musical culture, support a dedicated musician, have a good time, and come closer to achieving your true musical potential.
