Bansuri Bliss Founder Dr. Kerry Kriger at the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Bangalore, India.

Meet The Conductor

Led by Bansuri Bliss Founder Dr. Kerry Kriger, lifelong music educator, the Composers Circle is built on over two decades of Dr. Kriger’s musical experience. Having written over 700 pages of compositions and exercises for bansuri and tabla, Dr. Kriger is eminently qualified to lead these sessions. Dr. Kriger learned the art and details of musical composition and transcription from his guru Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao over the course of nearly a decade of private in-person lessons.

What You Will Learn

You’ll learn how to write and format your own compositions in clear, concise, unambiguous, and aesthetically pleasing ways, by hand and with graphic design software. You will also learn how to transcribe music you hear, and you will have a dedicated time to clean up all those old class notes you scribbled out during past lessons, ensuring they will be archive-worthy and ready to serve you – and possibly even your future students – well for decades to come.

What You Will Gain

🎵 A deeper understanding of north Indian rhythms and melody
📝 Confidence writing your own compositions and exercises, and the ability to take correct notes during your music lessons.
💡 The ability to write music that is easy to sight read
🎤 Direct, personalized feedback from Dr. Kriger and fellow musicians from around the world
📚 Access to a growing archive of past sessions and notations
🤝 A supportive community of fellow musicians on the same journey

Improve Your Musical Composition And Transcription Skills

Writing music clearly, correctly and unambiguously is a critical skill required for learning, understanding, remembering, archiving and sharing music and musical knowledge. As musicians, we should be able to compose music from our imagination and transcribe music we have heard, played or been taught. We also must take the time to clean up our notes and turn them into beautifully written, aesthetically pleasing, archive-worthy music notation that will assist our personal practice for years – or decades – to come. All this is the focus of the Bansuri Bliss Composers Circle!

Frequently Asked Questions

You do not need past experience; just a desire to learn. Dr. Kriger has taught hundreds of musicians to read and write Indian classical music, and believes that the basics can be learned in less than 10 minutes (though mastering it takes much longer). In general, reading and writing Indian Classical Music is significantly easier than reading and writing western staff notation.

Any musician interested in Indian music will gain a lot from participating. Ragas (melodies) and taals (rhythms) can be played on a variety of instruments or sung, so most of what we will be discussing is applicable across the Indian classical music spectrum.

You need Zoom to take part. You need a pen or pencil and paper during the sessions. Most of your writing will likely be in a notebook. You do not need any graphic design or music notation software, though if writing music digitally interests you, Dr. Kriger can provide input.

We don’t expect you to be at every session, so no problem. We will post recordings in Bansuri Bliss Academy and ensure you have access.

Access to Bansuri Bliss Composers Circle is free for Bansuri Bliss Members, and membership has a multitude of other benefits, so you may wish to become a member. Regardless though, as a non-member you can sign up for a quarterly or annual Composers Circle plan.

The ability to read and write music is extremely important for any serious musician – and fortunately it is easy to learn with proper guidance! Musical literacy enables you to visualize and analyze musical thoughts, and thus better understand and more rapidly memorize music. It also enables you to make permanent the lessons you were taught; archive them for future reference; and share compositions with fellow musicians and maybe even one day your students. And of course, musical literacy enables you to understand (and quite possibly play) the compositions passed down from your predecessors and past masters.

“Namaste Sir! Thank you for the gift, encouragement and appreciation. The way you teach is great. I heard that Music is difficult to teach as well as to learn. But after attending your sessions it does not look so. You with Bansuri Bliss made me start writing music and now I enjoy doing that. Making different combinations and connecting to the gat. I will try to write a few more variations with two notes in a row. I will practice and see that they sound good. I will write music with the required symbols. I also like to thank all my Gurus for their blessings. Thank you for everything!
With Love and Respect, Your Student, Suraj Sonar, Karnataka, India”

“Special thanks for the Darbari manuscript. The atmosphere of this raag and the fact that it is handwritten straight on leaf paper create a mystical atmosphere. I really like it.”
– Ivan Koshevoy, Bansuri Bliss Scholarship Recipient, Odessa, Ukraine
